Very awesome articles Marshall, All I can say is when I switched from a normal port to a sorta similar long skinny slots The sound of a speaker pounding inside a box totally went away. They're very realistic sounding now. I bet real Onkens like in the articles would sound even better.

Re: Valencia To Onken Project Article

    Interesting article on the Valencia.

Is there an easy way to tell the difference between an "Iconic" Valencia and 846A model? What are the differences? From what I've researched, the horns/drivers appear to be identical (806A driver, 811B horn, 416Z 15 in woofer). I've seen the "Iconic" logo on the back of some Valencia's, but had heard that the inclusion of the label did not necessarily indicate the speaker was an "Iconic" model...

I'm not an authority on this but I believe the only difference between the two may be the year of production/labeling. The pair of "Valencias" that I owned said "Iconic" on the label/sticker on the back of the cabs and didn't say the word Valencia anywhere on the speakers/cabinets/labels/stickers. There were built in 1969 and also had "Ling" and "Altec" printed on the label on the back of the cabs. They were 846A Valencias, however, with the 806A h.f. driver, 811B horn, 416Z woofer. Here's what they looked like...

This is what I knew an Iconic to be until you or someone else here noted it on a Valencia label [824]: http://www.hifilit.com/hifilit/Altec/1957-j.jpg

Some Onken material. Can anyone do a translation of the two L'Audiophile articles?

    Onken - Jensen Ultraflex - IP Ultra Bass - IP Ultra-Bass - Studio M

    Marshall.

And if you have any questions that the Google translation doesn't clear up, just ask. I was loosely part of the Revue de l'Audiophile crew back in the 80s. I knew those Onken boxes pretty well.
